What is the Diversity Advisory Council?
The Diversity Advisory Council reports to the President and Provost and coordinates with the Deputy Provost for Research and Minority Issues. This academic-focused Council will advise on broad approaches to issues of campus climate and specific further steps the University can take to increase the diversity of faculty, students, and staff. The faculty and student Council members also may make recommendations on programming and educational opportunities.
The Diversity Advisory Council comprises nine faculty members, including faculty chair Prof. Adam Green, five students, and two ex officio members from UChicago senior leadership.
During the fall of 2014, several groups of faculty and students raised issues about various aspects of climate on campus and called for a variety of actions to address climate issues and promote diversity and inclusion. President Robert J. Zimmer and Provost Eric D. Isaacs evaluated those statements and took steps to address concerns.
The formation of the Diversity Advisory Council is one of two new diversity and inclusion initiatives, with a campus climate survey for underrepresented groups planned for the fall of 2015.
